Southwark LGBT Network will be hosting 'Strong In Southwark' the first of two amazing Black History Month Events.
This event will explore the experiences of the Black LGBTQ Community upon arriving to Southwark on The Empire Windrush, how culture and faith/beliefs shaped their experiences, and how this impacts on us today.
The event will include a workshop on the history of Black LGBTQ history with Rev Marilyn Neuville, covering historical Black LGBTQ figures, their experiences, and the experiences of the suqsequent generations.
Rev Jide Macauley will be covering a workshop exploring the role in faith for the Windrush arrivals which will include a debate on whether religion liberates or oppresses the Black LGBTQ community
The location will also provide an exhibition space for the Southwark Queerstory Exhibition to showcase Black LGBT artists and activists. This work will comprise of fine art, photographs, and culminate in a specially created play by local playright Kofi Agyemang.
