On Sunday 18 June Bankside Open Spaces Trust is hosting what is likely to be the biggest street party the area has seen, with everything from bake offs to bark offs. It’s all part of ‘The Great Get Together’, a nationwide event inspired by Jo Cox and marks the first anniversary of her murder.
BOST is inviting people – residents and those who work in the area – to get together to celebrate all that we hold in common. What matters is that we have fun and bring communities closer together.
We bring people together every day in the parks and gardens we manage in this part of London. Our street party is being held in an area rich in history where some extraordinary women, such as Octavia Hill and Janet Johnson, worked and lived to improve the lives of others. Inspired by this and the life and work of Jo Cox, there is no better place to get together on 18 June.
We are delighted that David Haye has agreed to join us on the day as a special guest and that local businesses and organisations have engaged with the event with such enthusiasm.
Plans are being developed for a street party which will cater for a variety of activities and be zoned to allow for young and old to enjoy. We will have street closures and parking suspensions in place to allow people to enjoy the event safely. BOST sites at Redcross Garden will be transformed in to a village fete with maypole dancing, Punch and Judy, bake off and summer cocktails from Bompas and Parr. Crossbones Graveyard Garden will be reserved as a tranquil place to rest and enjoy.
Activities will include:
- Great Bankside Bark Off Dog Show.
- Gentlemen Baristas Great Wacky Races.
- ‘At Your Beat’- a new dance fitness brand taking London by storm, holding their first ever StreetBeat party.’
- Live music across three stages.
- Great Kids Zone and a mobile farm
- Vintage Market at Flat Iron Square
- Food and drink available from local businesses.
The street party will take place from 12 noon and the final music programme will end at 9pm. Redcross Way (south of Southwark St to Quilp St), Union St (from Southwark Bridge Rd to Borough High St) is where the street party will take place. These roads, together with O’meara St and Ayres St will be closed to traffic and parking suspended from 7pm on Saturday 17 June until 11.55pm on Sunday.
More details, including music and performances will be available in the coming weeks. Volunteers to help with the event would be most welcome. If you would like to be involved as a resident or a business please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org
